Is Pilates the same as yoga?

No, it isn't! Pilates is a very specific method that you've already read about here. Yoga is much more vast as it has many different styles and can range from sitting and meditating, to an extremely challenging power workout. Yoga is great for strengthening and stretching the body. While the physical practice of yoga is fitness, yoga is generally less fitness oriented and rather highlights the mind body connection.

What do you wear for pilates, AERIAL FITNESS?

We recommend tight fitting workout clothes, so we can see your form and alignment and also so loose clothing doesn't get in way of the machine, or distract you in an exercise. Pilates socks with grips on the bottom are welcome, but other we are barefoot. We ask that you leave jewelry home, as it can mark the leather, and it can snag the silk hammocks in aerial. For aerial, we recommend that you wear sleeves as not only is it more sanitary but it will be more comfortable for you in many poses.

CAN I EAT BEFORE CLASS?

We recommend having a snack about 30 minutes before class, but no heavy meals and not directly before class- especially for our Silk Flow class. Please bring your water as hydration is so important!

what if I've never done pilates OR AERIAL before?

No problem! We recommend that you take a private first before you jump into any of our group classes. For new clients, we offer one of two options: 2 privates for $120 or 1 private and 2 group classes for $99. Please contact us with any questions or to book your private.

Will we be hanging and doing flips in Aerial classes?

In our Silk Flow workshops, we will build up to a pose or two that may incorporate an aerial arts "trick" or inversion. If we incorporate the silks into our Mixer class, you may do one inversion in which you will have the option not to. Our instructors specialize in teaching to mixed levels and will be able to provide any modification needed.

WILL I GET MOTION SICKNESS IN AERIAL CLASSES?

In our Silk Flow classes, we will not be doing many swinging poses. However, if you are sensitive to motion sickness, you may experience this in certain poses. Please, let your instructor know before class and we will make sure you are stilled in any poses that you may be rocking. Doing aerial regularly may also help you to prevent motion sickness. You can also wear motion sickness wrist bands. Many people who experience motion sickness in cars and boats actually do not experience it in the aerial hammocks.

HOW IS MAT PILATES DIFFERENT THAN THE APPARATUS?

Pilates Mat in on a mat without using any machines such as the reformer or the tower. At Definition we call our Mat classes "Floor Core." Floor Core is just as challenging as apparatus,  but in different ways. You will still use equipment such as the magic circle, the triad balls, and hand weights. Mat is a great way to learn the foundations, especially if you find the machines intimidating at first. Either way,  the method of Pilates using small controlled and concise muscle movement remains the same.
